This book is similar to LUAS Harcourt Street Memories in that it practically counts as a PR exercise for Irish Rail, the State owned railway company in the Republic of Ireland, to the extent that the Chief Executive of this operation has written the foreword. From an IH perspective, you will not be satisfied with this publication as the photographs contained therein are exclusively of a train related nature, each photo backed up with text extolling the virtues of IR. In addition, most of the photos are credited to IR, hence backing up my previous assertion.
A couple of specific points worth commenting on are that on p.6, the author describes the Irish Rail "IR" logo as the first "IE" logo. The apparent desire of UK commentators on affairs of the Republic of Ireland to not offend Paddy's sensibilities, to the extent of pandering to the Irish Government's obsession with jackbooting the Irish language down our throats at every available opportunity, is grating. At the stage that the photo was taken, the trading name of the comapny was Irish Rail, hence it is not the IE logo.
Another is on p. 68 where the author states "IE is the custodian of many important and historic buildings which are a part of the nation's architectural heritage". What he neglected to state is that the company in question is also systematically destroying same with a vigour that would make the Holocaust look like an amateur operation.
