Due to a misguided interpretation of EU competition law, there is no integrated ticketing system in the Greater Dublin Area. Each transport company does its own thing and this includes ticketing. Below is a digrammatic map of the railway/tram network in Dublin. Please note that railway tickets are not valid on the tramway network unless they specifically state that the ticket includes LUAS. Both Irish Rail (State owned railway system) and LUAS (operated by Veolia) have day saver tickets allowing unlimited travel on their respective networks. There is no ticket available to allow use of both.
Both companies also operate a zero tolerance penalty fare system.
At the time of writing, Irish Rail have an inner short hop and outer short hop day ticket. Stations in the outer short hop zone are:
Unless your travels take you to one of these locations, best to get the inner short hop day ticket and save your money. Chances are that if you don't specifically ask for the outer short hop day ticket, you will be sold the (cheaper) inner short hop day ticket.
Another anomaly concerns the Kildare Line. Point to Point railway tickets that require transfer from Heuston Station to a station on another line (or vice versa) include free travel on the 90/91/92 bus feeder routes. However, the rail only day tickets do not, nor do they include the LUAS between Heuston and Connolly stations (even though the maps at IR stations and trains show the LUAS lines).
