| Railways (in Limbo)In Ireland, the State owned railway company, Irish Rail, specialise in closing railway lines by stealth - i.e., ceasing all services, not maintaining track and tarmacading over level crossings, rather than formally abandon the lines, which might give rise to criticism. These lines are "in limbo" - neither open nor closed. |

Station building0 viewsThe station building at Howth is a substantial two storey structure. Most of the building is let out for non railway purposes and sees use as "The Bloody Stream" pub. Shortly after I took this photo, I was working in a bank, where I remember telling a new colleague that another colleague probably spent the weekend in the Bloody Stream (he lived in Howth). She took this as indicating that said colleague was some sort of low life wino! I did take the opportunity to explain my remarks later.

Former D&KR Station9 viewsWhen the D&KR opened to its permanent terminus in Kingstown (since 1922 - Dun Laoghaire), it was to this area here, between stone walls with the harbour on one side and the present DART station on the other.

Goods store1 viewsLocated on the Up side of the line, the former goods store is more like an agricultural shed than a traditional goods store.

|

Staff platforms4 viewsWhilst the staff platforms for driver exchange predate the station at Clontarf Road, they remain to slow down traffic on northbound DART services, rather than undertaking the obvious transfer at the adjacent public station.

Loco shed and site of sidings77 viewsClose to the new, disintegrated station at Rosslare Europort, the former locomotive shed can be seen in the centre of the photo.

|

Bridge3 viewsSince replaced, the bridge over the Howth Road at Clontarf had the coat of arms at Drogheda. There is no record of where this disappeared to when the bridge was replaced.
