Site Description
Approaching the station, there is a disused loading bank on the Down side. The former goods store is on the Up side. There were previously sidings at the Manulla Junction end of the platform and a cattle bank behind it. The station building, which looks more like a
labourer's cottage of old, rather than a terminal station building, is on this. It was renovated in 1996 and a plaque in the station commemorates this. Previously, there was a turntable and locomotive shed on the Down side.
Ballina acts as a railhead for North Mayo and a substantial amount of freight is handled here. There is a two loop depot on the Down side as well as a separate depot 25 chains north of the level crossing. This is accessed by a through siding between the running line and
the goods area and crosses a level crossing at the northern end of the station. This latter extension is referred to as "Crossmolina Siding" and is all that remains of the branch to Killala. There was previously a storage area for the Asahi acrylonitrile trains from the North Wall
in Dublin, the containers for which were taken as far as here by rail and hence by road to Killala. There was formerly a gantry crane spanning one of the two loops in the depot, but this has been removed.
