Site Description

Docklands Station is a new station opened in 2007 (12th March) by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD at the end of a spur from Glasnevin Junction, using the former Liffey Line. It is accessed from Sherriff Street and is immediately north of the former North Wall depots of the Midland Great Western Railway and London and North Western Railway. The platforms at the station are regarded as temporary (as is the station) and can be relocated if necessary. The concrete box sections were cast by Banagher Concrete Ltd. The station is regarded as a temporary station only, as the DART Interconnector is proposed to make it redundant. As such, the planning permission for the station expires in May 2016 Adjacent to the platform is a weighing scales, which was previously in use at the freight depots on the site of the station. The station was unusually constructed such that it is only accessible from the Maynooth Line via Glasnevin Junction. If it had been built slightly to the east, it would have been accessible from both the Drogheda Line and the Kildare line by running services through the Phoenix Park Tunnel. The station building is at the end of the station behind the buffer stops. There is access to the building at both ground level (by way of a walkway through one of the arches of the adjacent road overbridge) and at first floor level direct to street level. Nendrum brick from Tyrone was used in the building - this was regarded as being of a similar style to GNRI brick. South of the station, the line previously continued on to the quayside depot of the MGWR. This area has since been sold and built on. Outside the station, beside the lifting bridge over the Royal Canal, there is a memorial stone with the MGWR coat of arms carved into it.
