Site Description

Fahan Station was the first block post on the line to Buncrana - although not a crossing point! The station building - which was on the Down side - also had a post office and a public house! Nowadays the entire station building is a pub and restaurant. Fahan Pier, behind the station, was also railway served. A trailing siding off the pier siding served the locomotive shed, which had previously been used as a coal store for a local trader. In the 1880s, the stationmaster here was a Mr. James Bond, who was responsible for the erection of a windmill on the nearby Fahan Hill to generate electricity for the station. It is believed that Fahan was the first station to be lit by electricity. A section of the railway alignment south of the station is now a private roadway.
