Site Description
Carrigans was a small station on the line between Strabane and Derry. It was also one of the three stations in the Free State/ Republic of Ireland between 1922 and closure in 1965. This gave it (and the other two stations) the unusual status of being owned and staffed by CIE between 1958 and 1965, but not served by any CIE trains.
There were both Up and Down platforms here. The station building on the Down platform was an interesting concrete structure - it remains today but extended and in use as a private residence. There was a level crossing at the Strabane end of the station. On the Derry side of this on the Up side was the signal cabin. Opposite, there are two semi detached railway cottages.
The StreetView image requires explanation. The image that displays is from the back of the station. The cottages referenced above are shown. Scrolling to the right shows the back of the station building. The railway was on the other side of these. To the right of the station building is a modern house. This is built on the trackbed of the railway.
