Site Description
Prior to the station, the line passes through Brackagh Bog. This was the site of an accident in 1886, which saw 6 people dead and 29 injured. Opened in 1848, closed 15 years later and reopened in 1970, this station is approached on a near 90 degree curve. The former loco area is on the Down side before the station and contained 1 of only 2 roundhouses on the GNR(I). The line to Armagh, closed in 1957, except for the 1 mile section to Brownstown siding, which closed in 1965 and the line to Derry via Dungannon and Omagh, which
also closed in 1965, trailed in on the Down side at the same end, beside the remains of the signal cabin. On the Up side opposite the signal cabin base, there are two facing sidings.
There are three platforms here, two of them composed by an island. Until 1996, the running lines served either side of the island platform, with a loop on the Up side serving the Up platform. The Down side of the island platform is now served by a loop off the Down line,
with the running lines serving the Up platform and one side of the island. A subway at the Dublin end of the station connects the two platforms. The signal room is on the Up platform at the Dublin end of the station building, which also contains a ticket office, waiting area and NIR training school.
